  • Accompanied by Raúl, Lina visits her sons in Santiago. Raúl asks to stay and go to school along with Fidel and Ramón at the Colegio La Salle.

  • Starts second grade at La Salle School in Santiago de Cuba

01/09/1937
  • When school starts again, the teaching staff at the Colegio La Salle acknowledges Fidel’s good grades and they allow him to pass to Grade Five, skipping Grade Four.
01/11/1937
  • His sense of rebelliousness about one of the inspectors in charge of boarding students at the Colegio, Brother Bernardo’s attitude and mistreatment results in the Principal calling in Ángel and Lina in order to complain about their sons’ behaviour.  Don Ángel decides to take his sons out of school and takes them back to Birán so that they can dedicate their time to farm life.

  • He is registered at the Cueto Civil Registry Office in Oriente province as Fidel Casiano Ruz González, in Folio No. 258. Volume No. 10.
  • After convincing his parents of his wishes to continue with his studies, he enrolls this day at the Colegio de Dolores, belonging to the Catholic order of the Company of Jesus (Jesuits) in Santiago de Cuba.
  • Along with his sister Angelita who was enrolled in the high school program, he starts living at the home of Don Martín Mazorra, the owner of a Santiago store where Don Ángel used to buy goods.

  • He starts Grade Seven on the same day World War II begins; he follows all the events in that war.
10/10/1939
  • Fidel visits Contramaestre invited by Aquilino Fernández, father of his classmate at the Colegio de Dolores, René Fernández Bárzaga.
11/10/1939
  • Fidel spends the day with his classmate René Fernández Bárzaga in Contramaestre where he visits the Contramaestre River, the Poza del Diablo and the Poza del Pitillán.
12/10/1939
  • He returns to Santiago de Cuba from Contramaestre, where he spends the weekend in the house of his classmate at the Colegio de Dolores, René Fernández Bárzaga.
15/05/1940
  • He applies to enroll at the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Santiago de Cuba,to start his high school studies.
