Borrell is urged to define a position against the US blockade of Cuba

Solidarity organizations with Cuba in member states of the European Union urged Joseph Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to condemn the United States blockade against the island.

In a letter addressed to Borrell, the activists requested that he assume a decisive position against the US economic, commercial and financial siege and on the inclusion of Cuba in Washington's unilateral list of countries sponsoring terrorism. The signatories pointed out that the extraterritorial nature of such a policy has negative effects on European citizens, substantially affects their rights, and undermines international law.

They also called for the reciprocation of the solidarity offered by the Caribbean nation to Europe in the hardest moments of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the presence of Cuban medical brigades from the Henry Reeve Contingent.

The high representative of the European Union and vice president of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, arrived in Cuba the day before to complete an official visit.

Borrell and the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez, will chair the Third Cuba-European Union Joint Council on May 26, in which the status of the implementation of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement will be evaluated.
