Ecuadorians Benefit from Cuban Literacy Program

More than 300,000 Ecuadorians have learned in 13 provinces how to read and write through the Cuban literacy method "Yo si puedo" (Yes, I Can), coordinated by a group of 54 Cuban professors who concluded their work in Ecuador with the recognition of authorities, teachers, and facilitators.

Hundreds of people attended an emotive ceremony at the Ministry of Education. They participated from 2011 in this battle that has reduced illiteracy rate from 6.5 to 3.5 percent of the population over 14 in the most backward provinces.

Minister counselor of the Embassy of Cuba Basilio Gutierrez, Bolivia's ambassador Maribel Rusena Santamaria, assembly member Ximena Ponce, and other authorities, participated in the conclusion of this phase, together with Education Minister Augusto Espinosa.

Espinosa acknowledged the work carried out by the island's educators, and stressed the will of the Citizen Revolution to eradicate the scourge of illiteracy.

The "Yo si puedo" program was created by Cuban educators, in order to contribute to the eradication of illiteracy among the peoples of the world, and is articulated with the program "Yo si puedo seguir" (Yes, I Can Continue), to ensure a basic level in young people and adults.
