Over 800,000 Bolivians Taught with Cuban Literate Method Yo Si Puedo

The Bolivian literacy program has taught 824,101 people with the Cuban method "Yo Si Puedo" (Yes, I Can) from 2006 to August 2012, Deputy Special and Alternative Education Minister Noel Aguirre said.

Since 2006, Bolivia has reduced illiteracy 3.7 percent in the country's 337 municipalities, the official told local media on the occasion of the International Literacy Day on 8 September.

Aguirre recalled that the achievement was recognized by the UNESCO, which declared Bolivia a territory free of illiteracy on December 20, 2008.

According to the official, about 70 percent of people who are doing literacy courses in the country are women.

Some 154,700 people over 15 years old are currently involved in the Bolivian post-literacy process in schools, prisons, nursing homes, educational and military units, neighborhoods, churches, and agricultural unions, among other places.
