US Activist Says Cuban Five Exemplify Cuba

The Cuban men who are incarcerated in the United States for having fought terrorism against their country are perhaps the only prisoners in the world to have received such support from their government, people, families and friends in solidarity, a U.S. activist said today.

It is Cuba's historical example that explains such a phenomenon, said Alicia Jrapko in an interview with Prensa Latina. Jrapko is the coordinator for the International Committee that is fighting for release of those men, imprisoned in US territory.

"They represent the dignity of all those who are fighting for a better world," emphasized Jrapko, who expressed her admiration for Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino and Antonio Guerrero, who remain incarcerated in US prisons.

She also expressed similar feelings for the two other members of the group that in its entirety is known as the Cuban Five: Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, who returned to Cuba after serving their full sentences.

Jrapko said that it is painful for the solidarity movement to see Rene and Fernando returned to Cuba only after serving their sentences, instead of having the US government rectify the injustice "by sending all of the Five immediately back to their country."

Nevertheless, she emphasized that the solidarity with the Five has been strengthened with their presence, "now free and in the front lines of the struggle, something which gives us strength."

"I myself think that their freedom is very close," she said, "but it is difficult to know whether this administration (of President Barack Obama) will be the one to open the doors of the prisons where Tony, Ramon and Gerardo are still being held."
