- He writes a letter to his comrades in Cuba in which he declares: ‘’It seems that they shatter you in a thousand pieces when they drive you away from your Homeland to which you can only return honorably, or never return. You would have to understand the firmness of this decision in order to judge our temper. I am still picking up the pieces of my personal feelings, which are those of a man that has forgone everything in this life for the sake of dignity, ideals, and duty.”
