Spain condemned on Monday the death of at least 19 people during the attack perpetrated by the Israeli navy on a civil flotilla carrying aid to Palestinians in the blockaded Gaza Strip.
As acting president of the European Union this semester, the Spanish government termed unacceptable the decease of unarmed civilians and immediately called the Tel Aviv ambassador to Madrid to ask for an explanation about the aggression.
Besides the dead, more than 30 members of the aid caravan were wounded in the attack in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Qatar-based Al Jazeera network, with a reporter in one of the nine vessels of the Liberty flotilla, stated that Israeli naval troops fired bullets and tear gases on the vessels loaded with medical materials, foods and other goods.
Armed soldiers shot against the ships, while other descended from military helicopters at open sea, in an impressive deployment of forces against pacifists with flags, placards and solidarity slogans.
