The President of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, paid tribute this Friday to Cubans killed while serving internationalist missions in support of the independence of African countries. 

The president laid a wreath of flowers at the Internationalist's Martyrs Cemetery in the cemetery at Colon, accompanied by Brigadier General Delsa Esther Puebla Viltres (Tete Puebla) and Cuban Deputy Foreign minister Rogelio Sierra. 

Ondimba arrived in Cuba Thursday afternoon, September 27, for an official visit after participating in New York at the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly. 

According to the program for his visit, Ondimba will hold talks with senior Cuban authorities and pay tribute to Cuban National Hero Jose Marti.

Gabon and Cuba established diplomatic relations on March 1974, with extremely strong ties in health, education and sports.

Currently, more than 30 Cuban health professionals are serving in that west central African nation, with a population of 1,500,000 inhabitants.

In turn, 26 young Gabonese are studying various careers in Cuba, including medicine, sports and educational sciences.

Last June, the Foreign Minister of Gabon, Emmanuel Issoze visited Cuba, holding talks with his counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez, in a meeting in which both reaffirmed their interest in strengthening bilateral relations.
