US Attorney Promotes Case of Cuban Five in Chile

HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 3 (acn) American lawyer Leonard Weinglass, a member of the defense team of five Cubans unfairly imprisoned in the US, will talk on Wednesday about the case with the president of Chile's Chamber of Deputies, Francisco Encina, and other deputies.
Weinglass, the defense lawyer for Antonio Guerrero, is in Chile to promote the cause of the five Cuban anti-terrorists who have been imprisoned since 1998. He is expected to meet with members of the Human Rights Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and with Cuba-Chile Parliamentary Group.
Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez were arrested in September 1998 for infiltrating anti- Cuba groups in Florida that organized and led criminal acts against the Cuban people and their top leaders. The “Cuban Five,” as they are known by the international campaign for their release, were subjected to a biased trial in Miami and sentenced to outrageous prison terms that include life sentences.
After arriving in Chile, Weinglass gave a keynote lecture on the case at the Central University in the presence of Chilean former judge Juan Guzman, president of the Human Rights Center. He also met with members of the Chilean branch of the American Association of Jurists.
The American attorney held talks with the president of the Communist Party of Chile, Guillermo Teillier, and other party leaders who has been carrying out actions for the release of the five Cubans, reported Prensa Latina.
In addition, Weinglass participated in a gathering organized by the Solidarity-with-Cuba Coordinating Committee, which invited the lawyer to Chile. According to Carlos Lagos, a leader of the organization, there are 68 groups across the country that are defending the cause of the Cuban Five.
