Defense Team of the Cuban Five Vow to Continue Fighting for Justice
Members of the defense team of five Cuban antiterrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States said that efforts for the release of these men have not concluded and that the struggle for justice continues along with the political battle.

Members of the defense team of five Cuban antiterrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States said that efforts for the release of these men have not concluded and that the struggle for justice continues along with the political battle.
The jurists explained that they are currently preparing for the re-sentencing of Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino and Fernando Gonzalez – three of the Cuban Five, as they are internationally known along with Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez-, which is scheduled for October 13, 2009.
According to Granma newspaper, Guerrero, Labañino and Gonzalez will be transferred to a penitentiary in Miami, Florida, where they will remain until the re-sentencing by Judge Joan Lenard.
Tom Goldstein, who led the defense team before the US Supreme Court, said that although this body decided not to review the case, important steps have been taken in the process.
“We are optimistic,” he stressed and added that the situation in which the re-sentencing will take place is very different from that of 2001, when the Five were arbitrarily and unjustly condemned.
He noted that, on this occasion, Judge Lenard will not only face legal arguments but also an overwhelming international support of the Cuban Five and all the suffering of these men and their families over the past ten years.
Regarding the introduction of new sentencing rules in the Miami court, Leonard Weinglass said: “Under these new sentencing rules, we believe that the life terms against Antonio and Ramon will be eliminated.”
The jurists reiterated their solidarity with the Five and particularly with Rene and Gerardo, whose wives have been repeatedly denied visas by the US Government to visit them in prison.
Ricardo Alarcon, President of the Cuban Parliament said that the case of Gerardo Hernandez is the most difficult one and that all efforts have to be made and all resources used to open it. “A normal relationship with the United States will not be possible until all of them are set free,” he stressed.
