Achievements in Cuban Food Security Highlighted

Cuba is an example in the achievement of food security for a population, and in the mobilization of support to eradicate hunger in other countries, says FAO representative to Havana Theodor Friedrich.
In an interview published today by Trabajadores weekly, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) official stated that the Caribbean island is one of the few countries that have historically achieved a good level of food security.
"As a result of joint work, there is plenty of visible infrastructure in the country and institutional development has been achieved with substantial investment, such as contributions to improve many institutes and research centers," he said.
With regard to the implementation in Cuba of initiatives on urban and suburban agriculture, the agronomist and Agricultural Mechanization stated that these have shown more favorable results than overall agricultural production, partly as a result of specific support to this sector.
The German-born specialist said that despite food security not having been achieved by many countries, positive changes have been observed in some Latin American nations, as the number of hungry people has been significantly reduced, in certain cases to below five percent.
