United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s representative to Cuba, Marcio Porto highlighted Cuba’s efforts in order to achieve world food security.
In statements to ACN news agency at the celebration this Thursday, October 16, of the World Food Day, the official explained that the Caribbean nation is the main provider of knowledge and human resources to the tripartite South-South cooperation program developed by FAO.
Porto praised Cuban contribution to risk assessments and protection of agriculture in the face of natural disasters, such as tropical cyclones, meteorological events that destroy thousand of hectares of crops and represent an ever latent threat to the region.
¨Existing technology should be shared and reach every producer in order to make progress, but there must be political willingness¨ said Porto, and added ¨ Developing countries, with the help of rich countries should become aware that food security is a matter of national security and a top priority¨
While enough food to feed the whole world is produced, every year more and more people starve, conditioned by the constant rise of food prices, he concluded.
