A group of young Germans will arrive next Tuesday to westernmost Pinar del Rio province to help for six months in the rescue of the botanical garden and communities damaged by hurricanes Ike and Gustav.

The Cubavision Internacional website reports that a dozen members of the Berlin-Cuba Friendship Association have as their main purpose to restore the garden, which has curiosities like Palma Corcho, a palm from the Jurassic period.

After working on the flora and repairing roads and bridges, they plan to work on the rehabilitation of schools, health center and other buildings.

Pinar del Rio province, 70 kilometers west of Havana city was one of the most battered provinces by the two meteors, and among the most devastated sites are Soroa Orchid Garden and Viñales Valley, declared UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape.
