The Medal of Honor of Dominica was granted on Monday to the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, for his contribution and services in favor of the people of this Caribbean island.

According to Granma news daily, the medal was presented to Cuban VP Esteban Lazo, who traveled to Dominica to receive the medal on behalf of the Cuban leader.

The presentation took place in front of more than 5,000 people who were celebrating the 30th anniversary of Dominica’s independence. The Cuban delegation was welcomed with a long ovation and then, the President of Dominica, Nicholas J. O. Liverpool, presented Lazo with the medal.

In his speech, Liverpool recognized the support of Cuba and, particularly, Fidel Castro.

For his part, Lazo explained that Fidel’s modesty would not allow him to receive the award on a personal basis but on behalf of the Cuban people.

During his visit to Dominica, the Cuban VP held bilateral meetings with Liverpool and with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

He also met with members of the movement in solidarity with Cuba in Dominica with whom he spoke about the ongoing struggle for the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States and also about the efforts underway in Cuba to recover from the damages caused by hurricanes Gustav and Ike last September.
