- He writes a letter from prison to Moncada garrison combatant Ñico López, who is in Mexico planning to come back to Cuba, with Calixto García Martínez, and who had written Fidel about his plans. In his letter Fidel says: “You must do so publically and appear before court as combatants from the Moncada. Now I explain you why. It is very little what you can do in the streets right now with us still in prison. What I propose to you is worthy of our group and will move public opinion. The proceedings would reopen and we would cause agitation in the country specially now when Batista is about to be officially inaugurated as president on February 24th. It would be a formidable psychological blow at a time when all the voices in the nation are calling for our amnesty. The trial would become the center of the public attention again and a magnificent stands to express our ideas…”
