Alicia Alonso Honored in Caracas
Sixty years after she performed in Venezuela for the first time, Cuban Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso was honored in Caracas on Sunday where she is directing the staging of her version of the classic ‘Giselle’ in a co-production between the Cuban National Ballet (CNB) and the Teresa Carreño Theater in the Venezuelan capital.

Sixty years after she performed in Venezuela for the first time, Cuban Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso was honored in Caracas on Sunday where she is directing the staging of her version of the classic ‘Giselle’ in a co-production between the Cuban National Ballet (CNB) and the Teresa Carreño Theater in the Venezuelan capital.
According to Granma news daily, the staging of ‘Giselle’ this weekend in Caracas was impeccable and showed the technical skills of Venezuelan dancers Cristina Amaral and Cristina Gallardo as well as Cubans Joel Carreño and Javier Torres.
“I’m very proud to feel, again, the beauty of Latin American dance,” said Alonso, who is also the Director and founder of the Cuban National Ballet and one of the most relevant figures in the history of arts and dance.
“I’m delighted to be here after so many years,” Alonso had noted after her arrival a few days ago in Caracas recalling that her last visit to Venezuela was 25 years ago when she played the leading role in ‘Giselle’
with the CNB in January 1983.
Alicia Alonso has received the highest official distinctions in Cuba, Spain, France, Mexico, Panama and the Dominican Republic and she is also a member of the World Peace Council.
