More than 7,000 artists and intellectuals from around the world have demanded the immediate lifting of the US blockade against Cuba.
Writers, journalists, playwrights, professors, heads of university departments and engineers, among other people, have signed the appeal of Cuban artists and intellectuals, called Con Cuba hoy (With Cuba Today), which also calls for the promotion of actions in solidarity with Cuba, which was severely hit by two powerful hurricanes.
The text posted on www.concubahoy.cult.cu points out that Cuba is now living a dramatic situation after the passage of hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which have had a strong impact on several economic sectors, particularly agriculture in throughout the Cuban national territory.
The document recalls that Cuba asked Washington to lift, at least for six months, its trade restrictions in order to purchase food and construction materials, reported PL news agency.
Cuba made this request after turning down a US donation of five million dollars, for considering that it couldn’t accept a donation from the government that has maintained a fierce blockade against its people, which has caused the nation losses amounting to some 93 billion dollars, according to official figures.
Hurricanes Gustav and Ike hit Cuba between August 30 and September 9 and left hundreds of affected families and losses worth several billion dollars, mainly reflected in the partial or total destruction of nearly half a million houses and in serious damages in the spheres of food, energy, and agriculture, among others.
