Syrian media is continuing reviews today of the 90th birthday of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and the 51st anniversary of the establishment of relations between the two countries.
'For six years Syria has been paying the price Cuba paid 50 years ago when they wanted to bomb it with missiles, invade it and intimidate its people, but Cuba has remained firm and has resisted,' the Great Mufti of the Republic, Ahmad Badr al-Din Hassoun, said.
He also stressed the important role of Fidel and said, 'Cuba is for the whole world and all humanity, an example of freedom, and the world has realized that Syria is going through similar experiences to those of the Latin American nation.'
'We cannot forget the strong support Cuba has given Syria in different international forums and bodies with regards to the war our country is fighting against terrorism. We also appreciate Cuba's condemnation of foreign interference in the internal affairs of Syria,' Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister, Faysal Mikdad added.
The ceremonies were held at the Cuban embassy, where the ambassador, Rogerio Santana stressed the historical ties between the two nations.
The relationship Fidel Castro held with Hafez al Assad and current Syrian President, Bashar al Aassad, were also highlighted.
The national television channel, Al Ikhabariya, transmitted an extensive report on the two important dates and the meetings of Fidel with Hafez al Assad in historical stages of the world revolutionary movement.
