Cuba is celebrating Teacher's Day today, on the date that Fidel Castro, historic leader of the Revolution, proclaimed the island a territory free of illiteracy.
It was the year 1961, and Cuba was immersed in providing education for all, with workers and farmers learning how to read and write for the first time in their lives.
On Dec. 22, the young Revolution proclaimed that the island had eradicated illiteracy.
There is no moment more solemn or exciting than this one, so full of pride and glory, and representing the end of four and a half centuries of ignorance, Fidel Castro then told a massive crowd gathered in a Havana plaza.
The day honors the daily work of the people who educate children and adolescents, and also our future engineers, lawyers, and economists.
Cuban National Hero Jose Marti is also honored, for his writings that educated other great Cubans.
