Cuba Demands Transparency at World Trade Organization

Cuba and several developing countries asked the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Thursday to bring the Doha Round to a successful conclusion with transparency and with the participation of all the international community.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, the minister counsellor of the Cuban Mission to Geneva, Jorge Ferrer, received support from nations such as South Africa, Ecuador and Venezuela against the mercantilist intentions of some WTO members, including the United States.
Ferrer deplored efforts to continue negotiations of the WTO’s Doha Round with bilateral parallel processes consisting of offers and petitions for market access, with which it would lose its multilateral and pro- developing nature.
The diplomat stressed that Cuba subscribes to the agreement of the First Latin American and Caribbean Summit on Integration and Development held in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, last December, regarding the need to bring the Doha Round to a successful conclusion that guarantees development goals through a balanced and equitable accord about access to markets of agriculture and industrial products.
Regarding the current world economic and financial crisis, Ferrer recalled that the project of recommendations of the Commission of Experts of the UN General Assembly said that its rapid expansion shows the necessity for a reform of the international financial and trade system.
