The National Association of Deaf People of Cuba (ANSOC) has awarded its distinction, Manos de Cristal (Glass Hands), to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and to President Raul Castro, according to local media reports.
During the organization's 4th Congress, held in the province of Matanzas, speakers highlighted invaluable contributions in working for the deaf community by both Fidel and Raul Castro, and their extreme sensitivity toward differently-abled people.
The Congress discussed issues such as official recognition for the Cuban Sign Language, and in the education field, proposals for preparing deaf students to enroll in university.
The National Association of Deaf People of Cuba association was founded on January 3, 1978 and currently has 23,500 members.
