Cuba was re-elected for a second period of three years as member of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) during a secret vote at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
According to Granma news daily, Mexico and Uruguay were also re-elected on Tuesday as Latin American representatives in the UNHRC.
According to a resolution of the UN General Assembly that gave birth to the UNHRC in 2006, this body is comprised of 47 states that are chosen directly and individually in a secret vote by the members of the UN General Assembly.
Africa and Asia have 13 seats apiece in the UNHRC while Latin America and the Caribbean have eight, Eastern Europe has six and Western Europe and other countries have seven.
In addition to Cuba, Mexico and Uruguay, five countries from Africa, five from Asia, two from Eastern Europe and three from Western Europe and other countries were elected on Tuesday.
Also re-elected were Cameroon, Djibouti, Mauritius, Nigeria, China, Bangladesh, Russia and Jordan, among others.
During the session, chaired by the permanent representative of Namibia at the United Nations, Ambassador Kaire M. Mbuende, Belgium, Norway, the United States, Hungary and Kyrgyzstan were elected as new members of the UNHRC.
