Cuba Sentences Terrorist to 30 Years
The People's Provincial Court in Havana sentenced Salvadoran Francisco Antonio Chavez Abarca to 30 years in prison on terrorism charges, the Granma newspaper reports Wednesday.

The People's Provincial Court in Havana sentenced Salvadoran Francisco Antonio Chavez Abarca to 30 years in prison on terrorism charges, the Granma newspaper reports Wednesday.
Testimony in his trial proved that Chavez Abarca recruited, trained, organized and financed Guatemalan and Salvadoran citizens who traveled to Cuba in the late 1990s to plant explosives, Granma adds.
Those who testified in the trial included victims of the events and other eyewitnesses, and expert and documentary evidences was presented during the proceedings on Monday and Tuesday. The witnesses included Salvadoran Raul Ernesto Cruz Leon and Guatemalan Nader Kamal Musallam Barakat, who were previously sentenced in Cuban courts on charges of terror crimes under the orders of Chavez Abarca, ringleader of an terrorist cell in Central America.
The group was created by terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF), and other anti-Cuban organizations based in south Florida.
In reaching a decision, the Court considered the commutation of the death sentences handed down in April 2008 by the Council of State and the repentance of the defendant.
