Cuba Uses Experiences to Prepare for Hurricane Season
Cuba is preparing to face the coming hurricane season using all the experience accumulated over the last years, especially those from 2008, when three hurricanes hit the country causing losses of more than 10 billion dollars.

Cuba is preparing to face the coming hurricane season using all the experience accumulated over the last years, especially those from 2008, when three hurricanes hit the country causing losses of more than 10 billion dollars.
Experts from the Institutes of Meteorology and Hydraulic Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Civil Defense outlined on the TV Informative Roundtable some of the measures to be taken to cope with the dangerous period, which lasts from June 1 until November 30.
Dr. Giselle Aguilar, from the Forecasting Center of the Institute of Meteorology, said that, although this hurricane season will not be as intense as the previous one, it is necessary to pay close attention to any eventuality.
Aguilar stressed that the political will of the Cuban authorities, the early warning of these events and joint action between forecasters, Civil Defense and the media enable people to better equip themselves, each year, for specific situations.
Aimé Aguirre, Vice President of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, said that when there is only a week left before the official beginning of the hurricane season, the volume of water accumulated due to the rains of these past days, obliges them to take precautionary measures for the potential overflow of reservoirs.
At a national level, the precipitations already exceed 91% of the historical average for May, while five provinces already exceed 100%.
