Cuba''s ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Alexis Bandrich, will host a lecture in the southeastern city of San Pedro de Macoris on the anti-terrorist fighters from his country unjustly imprisoned in the United States.
The Cuban diplomat will speak at the Municipal Palace of that city, under the auspices of the Friends Committee associated with the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).
That integration bloc, which emerged in December 2004, brings together Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and St. Lucia.
Bandrich and other embassy officials will also meet with local authorities, the rector of the Eastern Central University, Jose Hazim Frappier, and members of the Chamber of Commerce in the territory.
Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, and Rene Gonzalez were arrested on September 12, 1998 and convicted three years later with sentences of up to two life terms plus 15 additional years in prison.
The Cuban Five, as they are known worldwide, monitored anti-Cuban groups based in southern Florida in order to warn their country before the lethal actions of those groups could be carried out.
After remaining in jail until October 7, 2011 and completing half of an additional imposed sentence of three years of supervised release to be served on U.S. soil, Rene Gonzalez is now free in Cuba.
To achieve that condition, he was obliged to renounce his U.S. citizenship.
