Cuban Ballerina Alicia Alonso Awarded in Italy

The dancer and choreographer Alicia Alonso, founder and director of the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC), received in Italy the ''Leonide Masside'' Positano Dance Award, one of the most important in Europe, for her entire career.

According to a statement released today by the BNC, the mayor of the tourist town of Positano, Michele De Lucia, gave last Saturday the Cuban prima ballerina the prize, which was an original lithograph by filmmaker and designer Franco Zeffirelli this time.

The legendary performer was also honored with the Gold Medal of Rome, confered by Federico Mollicone, president of the Rome's Culture Committee .

The renowned critic and editor of the magazine Ballet 2000, Alfio Agostani-president of the jury, and the director of the Cuban Museum of Dance, Pedro Simon, accompanied Alonso, 91, on stage at the Teatro de la Spiaggia Grande in this community of Italian Amalfi Coast.

According to sources of the BNC, the day of tributes to the artist included the exhibition of the film 'Orbit of a legend', directed by Jose Ramon Neyra, and the opening of the photographic exhibition 'Alicia Alonso, a great career in ten pictures'.
