Osmani Urrutia Ramirez, one of the greatest hitters in Cuban baseball announced his retirement from the active sport this month, right before the beginning of the play-offs in the national championship.
Urrutia was born in a small municipality in eastern Las Tunas province, some 670 kilometers away from Havana city. He participated in several international tournaments with the national team, including Olympic, Pan American, World and Centro American championships.
Urrutia is, along two other great players, Omar “El niño” Linares and Michel Enriquez, the only ones to have an over .360 average in 15 or more seasons, an outstanding figure for any kind of baseball.
Besides, in five consecutive championships, between 2001 and 2005, he led the tournament in average, the only one in 48 seasons to achieve that feat.
To make this more remarkable, in 4 of them he batted over .400, and in one he set the current record with astronomic .469.
