Cuban Experiences Presented in Health Forum

Graduated doctors from the Latin American Medicine School (ELAM) presented the experiences they obtained from an integral attention program to oncology patients at public health primary level in a Cuban community Friday.
Edgar Tijerino, from Costa Rica, and resident in the speciality of Oncology, said that cancer is the second cause of death in Cuba, particularly the ones of lungs, prostrate, neck of the womb, breasts and colon, it was decided to make a process of investigation on the disease.
The process was started in Jaruco, east of Havana, with periodic exploration of the population, said the Cuban doctor during a session in the Global Forum Friday.
The strategy has as a final goal the decrease of mortality for the illness subjected to investigation, cancer in this case, and the identification of the biggest number of individuals to whom the possibility of an opportune and effective treatment is offered, to improve their quality of life, Tijerino explained.
Thanks to this project, up to the moment, 523 patients were assisted, and 45 positive new cases of cancer were detected, most of them breast and lung cancer who received the right medical and surgical treatment, he added.
For her part, Karen Padilla, from Honduras, detailed a similar process that was carried out to determine patients with diabetes mellitus.
In statements to Prensa Latina, José Miyar Barruecos, Cuban Minister of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), pointed out the importance of this work that is already carried out in other cities of the country and is subjected to extend to the whole island.
He highlighted that besides the investigation and the precocious diagnosis, they form part of the strategy, the formation of human resources and the population's satisfaction, when taking the specialized attention to the community.
