In the wake of Hurricane Ike, Cuban First Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura is in Holguin, where he called on the people of that province to work with discipline in the area's recovery.
Ventura visited hospitals in the city of Holguin accompanied by the president of the Defense Council of the province, Miguel Diaz Canel. No human loss has been reported so far.
Fallen trees blocked several streets in the city, while damaged houses and downed electric poles were the most visible effects in the town, according to local reports.
Since early Monday morning, communication workers and electric crews began working to re-establish those services in the city of more than 300,000 inhabitants.
Ike made its landfall as a category 4 hurricane at Lucrecia Point, in the eastern province of Holguin on Sunday evening. Its center is currently located off the South coast of Ciego de Avila province and moving towards the west. It is expected to head up to the west-northwest within the coming twelve hours.
