Solidarity organizations in Canada, and Lebanon, will stage demonstrations next September 12 to demand the release of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters held in US jails.
September 12 will mark the 10 years of imprisonment in US high security prisons of Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero, known as the Cuban Five. They were framed and arrested by FBI agents in 1998, after having collected information on Florida-based ultra-right groups that have undertaken terrorist actions against the Cuban people over the past four decades.
During the Alternative Days meeting, organized by the Alternatives NGO, and attended by 380 activists last week in Quebec, members of the Fabio DiCelmo Committee for the Five handed out leaflets inviting activists to participate in the September 12 demonstration in front of the American Consulate in Montreal.
After the Cuban Five case was presented at the Workshop on Cuba by Fabio DiCelmo Committee member Katharine Beeman, an emotional moment took place indicative of the internationalist spirit that reigned throughout the three-day series of activities.
Parliamentarians, union leaders and university professors were among the 80 members of the Fabio DiCelmo Committee for the Five, who attended the event and signed a letter demanding the Canadian government to intervene with the American administration to press for the release of the Cuban Five and to allow visitation rights for their relatives.
Arnold August, one of the panelists at the Cuba work shop and also a member of the Comite Fabio DiCelmo, told participants about 56 deputies elected to the parliament in Canada, who had signed in favor of the Five.
Meanwhile, Professor Hassan Jouni from the University of Lebanon, in Beirut, announced a major demonstration for Beirut on September 12 in front of the American Embassy to demand freedom for the Five.
The Fabio DiCelmo Committee for the Five was named after a young Italian tourist who was killed in a bomb blast in a Havana hotel, in the 1990´s; it was one more violent action in the chain of terrorist plans that have been designed by anti-Cuba and ultra-right circles in US territory with the consent of American authorities.
