Cuban Parliament Chairman Declared Emeritus Professor
Cuban Parliament's president, Ricardo Alarcon, was bestowed the honorary title of Emeritus Professor of the University of Havana in a ceremony held Wednesday.

Cuban Parliament's president, Ricardo Alarcon, was bestowed the honorary title of Emeritus Professor of the University of Havana in a ceremony held Wednesday.
Ruben Zardoya, rector of the university, read the resolution that endorses the title in recognition of the academic and political merits of the Cuban parliament president, who is a tenured professor and holds a PhD from the University of Havana.
Alarcon was Cuba's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Deputy Chairman of the UN's General Assembly. He held the position of Cuba's Foreign Relations Minister before becoming the President of the Cuban Parliament in 1993. He has been re-elected to that position on all the following years 1998, 2003, and 2008.
The President of the Casa de las Americas cultural institution, Roberto Fernandez Retamar, talked about Alarcon's revolutionary career that began when he was a student. He said Alarcon has been an example for the ideological and political thought of the younger generations.
Ricardo Alarcon said he was honored to receive the title which he dedicated to his wife Margarita and to the close university professor Vicentina Antuña, and to all the heroes that are part of Cuban history.
The ceremony was held in the University of Havana's Aula Magna in the presence of Cuba's Vice President Jose Ramon Fernandez, Higher Education Minister Juan Vela Valdes, and other representatives of the Cuban government and of the Communist Party and national intellectuals.
