President Miguel Díaz-Canel pointed out that Cuba today remembers the 65th anniversary of the release of Fidel Castro and other assailants of the Moncada barracks in Santiago de Cuba, and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, in Bayamo.
In his Twitter account, the Cuban president stressed that the departure of the young fighters from the Model Prison, at the then Isle of Pines (Isle of Youth since 1978), was caused by popular pressure on the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista (1952 -1959).
'That same day the intense march to conquer our freedom began,' Díaz-Canel wrote, referring to the armed struggle, organized after his release, which ended with the victory of the Rebel Army in December, 1958.
Fidel and his comrades in the fight, including his brother Raúl Castro and Juan Almeida Bosque, were released from their confinement on May 15, 1955, after an unfair prison term and a rigged trial for their participation in the armed actions of July 26, 1953.
The 'Moncadistas', as they were known, were released due to the amnesty decreed by the dictator Batista after strong pressure and demand from the people demanding their release.
The survivors of the attacks on the barracks in the then Oriente province were tortured and massacred, while others received severe sentences, as recorded in national history.
After his release, lawyer Fidel Castro, leader of the revolutionary movement, delivered to the press the well-known Manifesto to the Cuban people, published in the newspaper 'La Calle' on May 16, 1955.
The text confirmed that they would not rest until reaching the objectives of an emancipated Homeland and a better destination for Cubans, and announced the creation of the July 26 Movement.
