The medal of Founder of the Institute of Materials and Reagents for Electronics was conferred on Thursday upon Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, at the Main Lecture Hall of the University of Havana.
Other personalities deserving this distinction were Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes, and Pedro Miret, Commander of the Rebel Army.
Ernesto Estevez, director of the scientific institution, highlighted the support given by the indisputable leader of the Revolution to the creation and development of the Institute, founded 25 years ago.
He referred to the achievements of the scientific center since its founding, among which he underlined medicament patterns for the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, the construction of a laser device for eye surgery, the obtaining in Cuba of the first atomic images, and the creation of a technology for silicon solar cells.
Esperanza Puron, also a founder, urged workers to redouble their efforts for the work of the institute, adding that she was satisfied with the development of its new members, trained under the principles of Father Felix Varela: Science and awareness.
Presiding over the activity were Deputy Education Minister Aurora Fernandez; former education ministers Fernando Vecino Alegret and Juan Vela Valdes; Ismael Clark, president of the Cuban Academy of Sciences; and Gustavo Cobreiro, rector of the University of Havana.
