Yargelis Savigne, world triple jump champion, both indoors and outdoors, heads a group of three Cuban athletes who will participate on the opening day of triple-jump competition Friday at the spectacular Birds Nest Stadium.
Yargelis, 23, from Guantanamo, had her best mark of 15.28 in 2007 and has a 15.20 this year. She should have no problem in qualifying with the
14.45 minimum demanded to be in the finals set for Sunday. Reaching that far will be considerably harder for her teammates Mabel Gay (14.41) and Yarianna Martinez (14.31).
Greek Chrysopigi Devetzi had the season’s best with a 15.22 meter jump.
Also present will be Russian Levedeva with a 14.59 meter jump this year and Athens champion Cameroon’s Francoise Mbango Etone.
