Cubans Brace for Tropical Storm Gustav
As tropical storm Gustav continued to move towards the areas South of
Cuba and was located this morning at 200 kms South-east of Guantanamo,
authorities and the population in eastern Cuba continued to take all
precaution measures, established for the Watch stage which was declared
for eastern Cuba by the Civil Defense.

As tropical storm Gustav continued to move towards the areas South of Cuba and was located this morning at 200 kms South-east of Guantanamo, authorities and the population in eastern Cuba continued to take all precaution measures, established for the Watch stage which was declared for eastern Cuba by the Civil Defense.
Some of the actions underway in the eastern territories include the evacuation of people from low or risky areas, the protection of cattle heads and material resources, as well as other preventive measures taken by state institutions, enterprises and the people in all neighborhoods.
In Granma province, some 4,700 people had been evacuated until late hours Tuesday night. Many of them went to the homes of neighbors and relatives, as well as to state institutions that serve as shelters.
In Holguin, the Provincial defense Council increased evacuation programs and the protection of economic resources in the face of possible intense rains. Specific actions are being taken in all five mountainous municipalities in this western province, since they are expected to received the impact of Gustav´s rains.
Meanwhile, some 1, 350 people were taken to shelters in several municipalities in Las Tunas province. Those living in low areas were the first to be evacuated like the families living in the locality of Guayabal, which is very vulnerable to sea floods. Although Gustav weakened and is now a tropical storm, evacuation and other measures for the Watch stage continue to take place in this territory.
In the easternmost province of Guantanamo, preventive actions also include the evacuation of people from camping areas; the protection of some 11, 200 cattle heads in safe places and the collection of root vegetables and other produce that could be lost with the passage of the storm.
And in Santiago de Cuba, rainfalls have been calculated at between 10 and 25 millimeters over the past 24 hours in different zones. The Agriculture Ministry continues to take measures such as the protection of 16,000 cattle heads and other animals, the dismounting of watering equipment, while farmers have stepped up the harvest of different crops.
Other preventive actions include the readiness of several brigades of electricity workers to give rapid response to possible damage inflicted by the rains and reservoirs in the territory keep under supervision.
Weather reports say Gustav will continue to move west-northwest at some 7 kilometers per hour. A west-northwest to west track has been forecast for the next three days, with gradual increase in speed. That means that over the coming hours Gustav is expected to pass between Jamaica and Cuba´s southeastern coast on Thursday.
The storm has maximum sustained winds of nearly 60 mph..95kms per hour, with higher gusts. However, meteorologists say that the storm could regain hurricane strength over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Gustav is expected to produce rainfall accumulations in eastern Cuba, which could produce flash floods and mud slides.
The Cuban civil defense and local authorities are taking all precaution measures to protect human life, as well as personal and public property, all those actions are being implemented with the help and support of the well organized Cuban people.
