Cubans to Improve Preparedness against Disasters

The Chief of the Cuban Civil Defense National Staff, Division General Ramon Pardo Guerra called for the improvement of the country´s protection system against natural, technological and health-related disasters.
In his opening remarks of the national exercise Meteoro, which takes place prior to the hurricane season (June 1-Nov 30), Pardo Guerra stressed the need to achieve top-level preparedness to face highly dangerous situations caused by hurricanes, high-intensity quakes and exotic diseases
During the first day of training, all commanding bodies at all levels checked the measures to be adopted as to risk reduction strategies and they also followed up on their implementation according to the experience stemming from each territorial model and every economic sector.
The Chief of the Cuban Civil Defense referred to the need to be alert and not to disregard any measures although only three cases of the Influenza A H1N1 have been detected in the country. The population can be confident because the nation has all means and medications necessary to counter the disease.
In that regard, deputy health minister Luis Estruch Rancaño addressed participants at a meeting of his entity´s command center to explain about the reinforcement of the clinical and epidemiological surveillance system and the control of arrivals at airports, maritime terminals and marinas.
The Chief of the command center at the Communications and I.T. Logistics body with the National Defense Council, Colonel Jorge Martinez Abreu said that entities belonging to that body are focusing on lowering disaster-related vulnerabilities.
The Meteoro exercise, which has been held in Cuba since 1986, will conclude on Sunday.
