Cubans Pay Tribute to Initiator of Independence Wars
Cubans gathered at the colonial section of this capital city on Thursday to pay tribute to Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, known as the Father of the Cuban Homeland, for having been the initiator of the Independence war that kicked off October 10, 1868.

Cubans gathered at the colonial section of this capital city on Thursday to pay tribute to Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, known as the Father of the Cuban Homeland, for having been the initiator of the Independence war that kicked off October 10, 1868.
Cespedes, a landowner in the eastern locality of La Demajagua, freed his slaves and called on them to fight the Spanish colonial rule, a historic action that marked the start of the Independence war against Spain in the 19th century.
The Tribute-paying ceremony took place at the monument of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes raised at Havana’s Square of Arms. Attending the gathering were the director of the Jose Marti Program Office, Armando Hart Davalos; Revolution Commander Juan Almeida Bosque; the Historian of the city, Eusebio Leal, and leaders of grassroots and political organizations.
Many wreaths were laid at Cespedes´ Monument, sent in by several institutions and ministries, as well a by Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro.
The notes of the Cuban National Anthem were played by the Music Band of the Army’s General Staff, which also offered other tunes that recall the historic independence development.
After the ceremony, participants visited the City’s Museum to admire the first Cuban flag hoisted on Cuban territory and recalle the date, which was declared as National Rebelliousness Day.
