The Sugar industry cranked up its first mills for the new harvest over the weekend in the eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo.
According to experts on the sector the country has enough sugar cane available to match last year's output of 1.5 million tons of sugar.
The Ministry of Sugar calendar has 30 mills scheduled to be operating by the end of 2008 with 14 more than the same period last season. The remaining 22 mills should be producing as of January, says a report by Granma newspaper.
This year’s yield had been set to surpass the 2007-2008 harvest by 20 to 30 percent, but because of the damage caused to the cane crop and to some mills by hurricanes Gustav,Ike and Paloma, specialists on the industry are now looking to making optimum use of the cane to maintain the past production of 1, 5 million tons.
“Without a doubt the workers are facing another big challenge,” said Granma’s report.
