Cyprus' Solidarity Gesture with the Cuban People
Cyprus' Foreign Minister Markos Kipryanou announced that his government will donate 100, 000 dollars to help the Cuban people, who were hit by recent hurricanes Gustav and Ike. The Cypriot top government official made the announcement during a meeting today with Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque.

Cyprus' Foreign Minister Markos Kipryanou announced that his government will donate 100, 000 dollars to help the Cuban people, who were hit by recent hurricanes Gustav and Ike. The Cypriot top government official made the announcement during a meeting today with Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque.
“I’d like to express my solidarity with the Cuban people, who were hit by two hurricanes,” said Kipryanou during official talks with Perez Roque at the Cuban Foreign Ministry.

The Cypriot government official recalled that 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations between Cuba and Cyprus will be mark in three years. He added that Cyprus, with nearly one million inhabitants, is geographically far from Cuba but politically very close, which has been proved by Cyprus’ position at the UN General Assembly.
Cyprus as supported, in the European Union, the lifting of sanctions imposed in 2003 by that bloc on Cuba and backs closer links between the so-called group of 27 plus Cuba, said the Cypriot Foreign Minister.

Meanwhile, Felipe Perez Roque said bilateral relations are marked by longstanding friendship on the basis of mutual respect, solidarity and frequent exchange. He thanked Nicosia for its support at the UN of the Cuban resolution demanding the unconditional lifting of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against the Caribbean island.
The Cuban Foreign Minister said that the official visit to Cuba by the Cypriot official is the first of its kind after the European Union definitively lifted its sanctions on Cuba.
Markos Kipryanou met a tight agenda on Monday, which included meetings with the president of the Cuban Parliament Ricardo Alarcon and with Fernando Remirez de Estenoz, member of the Secretariat of Cuba’s Communist Party Central Committee.
Cuba and Cyprus established diplomatic relations on November 22, 1960.
