Defense Speech by Fidel Castro to be Evoked
Jurists, intellectuals, authorities and citizens of this city will evoke the 60th anniversary of the self-defense speech given by Fidel Castro in response to the charges that were brought against him for the July 26, 1953 assault on the Moncada garrison.

Jurists, intellectuals, authorities and citizens of this city will evoke the 60th anniversary of the self-defense speech given by Fidel Castro in response to the charges that were brought against him for the July 26, 1953 assault on the Moncada garrison.
His speech, known as "History Will Absolve Me," became the founding program of the Revolution. He delivered it during a hearing held on Oct. 16 of that year in the Civil Hospital of Santiago de Cuba, where the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes garrison also was assaulted that Sunday morning.
Considered as the most important political, revolutionary and juridical work of 20th century Cuba, the document transcended its time and geographical boundaries, enduring to this day as an exposure of the evils brought by the capitalist system to the Cuban people and a projection for leaving behind that somber panorama.
The National Union of Jurists and the Organization of Collective Legal Practice will sponsor a scientific event with the participation of members of the Writers, Artists and Historians group to shed new light on the event based on academic research.
At the Abel Santamaria Museum, located in the former hospital, tribute is paid to that martyr of the Revolution, who was the second in command of the Cuban liberation war.
