The Aula Magna of the University of Havana held today the inauguration ceremony of the department Jean Monnet, devoted to European Union studies, on the occasion of Europe Day.

The department, which is attached to the Faculty of Philosophy and History and started its academic work in September 2015, has became an institutionalized academic space to promote research and analysis of the integration process in Europe from Cuba, its president Eduardo Perera said.

European integration as a historical phenomenon is an object of study of great academic and scientific interest, he added.

The European Union is an important global actor, with a position of economic and political power in developed countries, so studying its nature, evolution, composition and projections from the perspective of historical and political science is relevant, he said.

According to Perera, continuous and profound approach to this essential subject will allow us to better understand the relationship between its member states and our country, and Cuba's ties with the bloc as well.

Other members of the diplomatic corps of the EU member states in this capital participated at the ceremony, along with the head of the EU delegation in Havana, Hermann Portocarrero, who stressed the usefulness of this department to exchange on the ideals and functioning of European and Cuban societies.
