The Bolivian Health Ministry warned that the drought in the altiplano and El Chaco regions could increase diarrheic, dermatological and severe respiratory diseases.

According to Head of Environmental Health Mario Villagra, quoted on Thursday by Cambio newspaper, if the weather phenomenon continues, the people living in the affected areas will be at risk of contracting one of those diseases and other pathologies.

Faced with that danger, Villagra said the highest health authorities in the country had designed an emergency plan in coordination with the National Council for Risk Reduction and Attention to Disasters.

Drinkable water supply to dwellers in Chuquisaca, La Paz, Tarija, Oruro, Potosi and Santa Cruz departments, seriously affected by the drought, is among the measures adopted.

The official explained that the departmental health services in the affected regions are carrying out strenuous operational works along with Armed Force members to mitigate the demand for the liquid resource.

Villagra said no dead people due to this weather phenomenon has been reported so far, but they have confirmed cattle deaths.
