East Timor Offers Cash Aid to Hurricane-Hit Cuba
The Prime Minister of East Timor, Xanana Gusmao, announced on Thursday that his country will donate 500,000 US dollars to Cuba as cash assistance to help in the recovery from the damages caused by hurricane Gustav, which devastated the Isle of Youth Special Municipality and areas of the province of Pinar del Rio last weekend.

The Prime Minister of East Timor, Xanana Gusmao, announced on Thursday that his country will donate 500,000 US dollars to Cuba as cash assistance to help in the recovery from the damages caused by hurricane Gustav, which devastated the Isle of Youth Special Municipality and areas of the province of Pinar del Rio last weekend.
Speaking on television, Gusmao recalled that solidarity with other peoples is a principle that appears in the Constitution of his country and, thus, the Council of Ministers of East Timor decided to send this donation to the Cuban people and government.
Xanana Gusmao gave details of the significant damages caused by Hurricane Gustav in Western Cuba where it hit, among many other facilities, a school in the Isle of Youth where youths from east Timor are studying medicine.
A note published by Granma newspaper on Friday reads that the Cuban people “are all moved by this gesture as East Timor is a small country of the Third World with very limited resources that, with this decision, shows its fraternal feelings and encourages our internationalist spirit.”
