Salvadorian President Salvador Sanchez Ceren arrives in Cuba today on an official visit, during which he will hold talks with his Cuban peer Raul Castro, and develop other activities, Granma newspaper reported today.
After confirming the visit to Havana from San Salvador, Hugo Martinez, Foreign Minister of that Central American nation, stated that Sanchez Ceren comes accompanied by at least seven ministers, among them those of Health, Education, Environment, Agriculture, Economy, Foreign Affairs, and Technical Secretariat of the Presidency.
Cuba and El Salvador established diplomatic relations on November 11, 1902. They were broken off on March 1, 1961 by a decision of the Central American country.
Ties were restored on June 1, 2009, as the first act of the government of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), under President Mauricio Funes, who took office that same day.
United to the excellent bilateral relations, cooperation ties and the economic-commercial relations between both countries are currently developed mainly in the spheres of training of human resources, health, education and sports.
However, increasing the economic-commercial exchange, and bilateral collaboration in other branches, such as social prevention, culture, mitigation, risk of natural disasters, agriculture and cattle raising, among others, is possible.
Since 1992, when the medical cooperation began with El Salvador, more than 600 Cuban collaborators have worked in the so-called "Pulgarcito de America" (The Tom Thumb of the Americas), while about 1,207 Salvadorians have been graduated in Cuba in different careers.
Sanches Ceren was Vice President of El Salvador during the first government of the FMLN, from 2009 to 2014. As presidential candidate, he was elected in the March 2014 elections and assumed the presidency of his nation on June 1, 2014, for a mandate that will conclude on May 31, 2019.
