The European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmström, recognized in Brussels the feeling of outrage existing in the interior of European institutions and the European Union at the delay of President Obama in closing the prison in Guantanamo, a territory illegally occupied by the United States against the will of the Cuban people.
She pointed out that it was a promise made by Obama during his presidential campaign, when he said he would close it once he assumed his post, the Granma newspaper reported.
In a press conference Malmström stressed it was a disgrace that this prison continues to be open and that the people held there haven’t had a fair trial, Europa Press reported.
The commissioner said that she was voicing the opinion of the European Union and all the country members and institutions which have repeatedly reminded this to the United States in their contacts, the Notimex news agency reported.
Shaker Aamer, the only inmate of British citizenship held in the illegal base of Guantánamo, started a hunger strike on Friday, September 9, for not having been granted a release in 2007, when former president George W. Bush ordered his release for lack of evidence against him.
Amer and another eight detainees signed a letter denouncing the inhumane treatment they have endured for years in the illegal prison. The letter was broadcasted by the British radio station’s BBC Radio 5 program, the Telesur television network reported.
