HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 17 (acn) Cuban Revolution Leader Fidel Castro was granted the Ububto 2008 Solidarity Award by the South Africa National Heritage Council (NHC).
During a press conference in the South African capital Pretoria, Sonwabile Mancotvwa, executive director of NHC said that the is granted to personalities whose life has been consistent with the humanitarian values of the Ubuntu African philosophy, which is based on unity and solidarity.
He affirmed that Fidel deserves the award for the role he has played in the Cuban Revolution and for his contribution to world struggle for an alternative and fairer society, according to an information posted on the website of Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Fidel will be the third international personality to receive the distinction, which entails the tradition of honouring world leaders that have fought for equality and human rights in their countries and around the globe, said the executive.
The Ubunto Award was previously granted to Nelson Mandela and to Kenneth Kuanda, of Zambia. The official awarding ceremony will take place next September 24 in the South African province of Limpopo.
