The first Department of Jose Marti Studies in a Chilean University was officially opened with a keynote lecture by
Cuban PhD. Pedro Pablo Rodriguez, from Havana’s Center for Studies on Jose Marti.
The new department, at the University of Arts and Social Sciences in Santiago de Chile, will contribute to broadening studies on the Latin American thinking of the Cuban national hero.
The opening ceremony, which was attended by hundreds of Chilean students and professors, was followed by the inauguration of a photo exhibit on the life and work of Jose Marti, Prensa Latina reported.
Rodriguez donated the first 16 volumes of the Critical Edition of the Complete Works of Jose Marti to the library of the university. He highlighted the presence of Marti’s ideas in the region and noted that, “new winds are blowing towards Latin American integration.”
In his lecture, the Cuban researcher and journalist pointed out that Marti stood against the US’ first attempts to dominate the region by calling on continental unity and fighting for the independence of Cuba.
Olga Fernandez, educational attaché of the Cuban embassy to Chile, introduced Rodriguez.
Fernandez stressed the importance of having a department on Jose Marti studies at the university and thanked the college’s authorities.
Present at the ceremony were also the Venezuelan and Nicaraguan ambassadors; the rector of the university, Carlos Margotta; and the Jose Marti Department’s coordinator, Jorge Benitez.
