France: Tribute to Ignacio Villa in Ceremony for Cuban Culture

With the screening of the documentary "Yo soy la cancion que canto," about musician Ignacio Villa (known as Bola de Nieve), the celebration for the National Day of the Cuban Culture began today in France.
Many intellectuals, artists, members of the diplomatic staff accredited in France and at UNESCO, as well as members of organizations of solidarity, attended the ceremony, held at the Cuban embass Alejo Carpentier Hall.
The documentary, directed by Mayra Vilasis in 1985, is a tribute to one of the most universal Cuban artists, who traveled to many nations, and performed several times here between 1951 and 1958, the embass second secretary, Saily Prieto, said.
She recalled that Cuban Culture Day is celebrated on October 20, commemorating one of the most relevant events in the country history, the first time the National Anthem, called La Bayamesa, was sung.
Also, on occasion of the date, a photo exhibition about the restoration of the Higher Institute of Art in Havana and a contemporary painting exhibit, by artists Alicia Leal and Michel Mirabal, were opened.
