The case of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly held in the United States was the issue of a discussion held with dozens of students from the University of San Carlos, the oldest and most prestigious institution of its kind in Guatemala.
Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero fought terrorism from U.S. soil, explained Enrique Alvarez, on behalf of the Guatemalan Coordinating Committee of Solidarity with Cuba and the Peoples.
The discussion with the students took place last evening at the College of History at that university.
Alvarez, director of the International Relations department of the New Nation Alternative (ANN) Party, said that there is an extensive international movement working for the liberation of those Cubans, known internationally as the Cuban Five.
Four of them are still in prison, while Rene must remain in the United States under supervised release, as an additional punishment after having completed his sentence in October 2011.
The Five were condemned in 2001 to long prison terms, after a unfair and rigged trial.
