The rector of Havana University Gustavo Cobreiro Suárez presented Bolivian President Evo Morales with the Honoris Causa degree from this higher studies institution.
Morales was granted the degree, in Political Sciences, for his outstanding contributions in defense of the poor, his political work and his struggle for the environment. The resolution, read by Cobreiro, highlights Morales’s decades of struggle in the Bolivian political scenery from his time as a union leader and later as President.
The text also praises his governmental programs, which have benefited the most marginalized stratus of Bolivian society, boosting education and heath care.
The Bolivian president he said he was surprised of being presented with this degree and added it was not only him the recipient for this acknowledgement, but also the Bolivian people for their work on the development of their nation.
Cuban First-Vice-President Jose Ramón Machado Ventura presided over the ceremony in the university’s Aula Magna. Cuban Higher Education Minister Miguel Diaz Canel also attended.
Evo Morales arrived in Cuba on Sunday, in an official visit and will meet with Cuban president Raul Castro, among other activities.
